Today I have Rakesh from Simpli Capital here. Without further ado, we would love for you to introduce your company and explain what you do.

Thank you very much, Andy. I appreciate being here. Simpli Capital was launched three years ago. To give you a better picture, Simpli Capital acts as a smart assistant for a business's cash flow management. It uses artificial intelligence to help businesses manage their cash flow much more efficiently.

With our system, businesses can improve their cash availability by up to 20% or more. We achieve this by speeding up collections, optimizing bill payments, and improving cash forecasting. Our platform streamlines the entire cash flow process end-to-end, saving up to 90% of the manual tasks by converting them into automation. This means businesses using our system benefit from a simple and effective cash flow solution, which is especially powerful in today’s scenario.

That sounds great! What led you to your current career and inspired you to start Simpli Capital?

It’s an interesting journey. I started my career at Toyota and worked for major companies like General Electric, FedEx, and Citizens Bank over 30 years. During the Great Recession in 2008, I experienced firsthand how cash management could impact a company's survivability. Later, during COVID, I observed how poor cash management could push even very good companies to the brink of bankruptcy.

It became clear that many companies fail not because they are unprofitable, but because of cash flow issues. So, around the end of COVID, my partner and I decided to build a company that would offer a sophisticated cash management system for small and medium-sized enterprises, bringing them to the same level of sophistication as large multi-billion dollar companies. That’s how Simpli Capital was born. Transitioning from a corporate career to entrepreneurship has been a journey with its ups and downs, but we are excited about our future and doing really well. It requires thriving in chaos, as the corporate safety net isn’t there, but it’s been a great learning experience.

I love the name "Simpli Capital" and the concept of simplifying sophisticated enterprise-level technology for SMBs.

Exactly, Andy. Our basic premise or tagline is “We simplify your financial operations.” That’s literally the role we see for ourselves in the world.

Simplicity is key, as they say—keeping it simple is always a good approach.

In a recent white paper, you discussed the concept of “trapped cash” and the opportunity it represents. I find this concept intriguing because not every business has cash readily available. Could you explain what trapped cash is and how business leaders can identify and unlock it within their organizations?

Certainly. One of the benefits of Simpli Capital’s AI is that we provide real-time visibility into cash flow, along with analytics and strategies to improve it. It’s like upgrading from a Toyota Prius to a Tesla Model S in terms of functionality and efficiency.

Traditionally, companies use metrics like Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) or Days Payables Outstanding (DPO) to measure cash flow efficiency. However, these metrics are often assessed at the end of a quarter or year, missing out on what happens throughout the year. For example, if you get paid at the end of the month, DSO may look better than it actually is.

We introduced the term "trapped cash opportunity," which refers to cash tied up in overdue receivables or early payments to suppliers. Trapped cash opportunity could be zero if everyone pays on time and you don’t pay early. However, efficient cash flow systems like this are rare.

In our white paper, we analyzed five companies deeply and found that many had trapped cash opportunities two to three times their average cash balance. For instance, a $25 million company with an average cash balance of $2 million might have a trapped cash opportunity of $2 to $4 million. In today’s high-interest rate environment and tighter credit conditions, this represents a significant opportunity for growth.

I love how AI is used to boost productivity by handling 80% of the work, with humans still identifying key opportunities.

Exactly. When we launch with clients, we first identify their trapped cash opportunities and then help them reduce it as they use more of our AI and automation. We apply the strategies we’ve developed over 30 years to improve their cash flow. Essentially, clients benefit from our expertise without needing to learn the hard way themselves.

Cash flow is indeed the lifeblood of a company, and many companies face challenges that can be mitigated by identifying and unlocking trapped cash. Could you expand on how businesses can enhance their cash flow today? What tips would you recommend for business owners and managers to ensure they operate in a financially healthy and efficient manner?

Thanks, Andy. Cash is king, and its importance has only grown. Many companies we work with are paying high interest rates to raise cash, and banks are tightening their credit conditions, making cash management even more critical.

Managing cash flow effectively can help businesses cut unnecessary expenditures and unlock trapped cash. It’s important for business owners and managers to continually monitor and optimize their cash flow to maintain financial health. Cash is incredibly valuable today, and even more so under current circumstances. There are many strategies built into our product that, once you start using them, will become evident and effective. Let me outline a few key takeaways from this discussion that could be very helpful.

1. Real-Time Visibility

First, having real-time visibility into your cash and the underlying drivers is crucial. Day-to-day cash management is far more important than just evaluating your cash position at the end of a quarter. Real-time data allows you to make timely decisions and adjustments.

2. Regular Cash Reviews

Second, establish a cash review process within your company. This could be done weekly or monthly, depending on your company’s rhythm. Use real-time analytics from systems like ours to guide these reviews. Identifying issues early is key. For example, it's much better to remind a customer to pay an invoice before it's overdue. Often, nudging a customer ahead of time can help them pay on time and build a strong relationship.

3. Involve Your Sales Team

Third, consider involving your sales team in the collection process. Sales teams are often aware of any issues or delays with customers. They can also nudge customers for payment, which can be effective since they frequently interact with them.

4. Automate Processes

Lastly, automate as many processes as possible. Automating tasks like sending reminders and creating payment schedules can save valuable time for your finance team. This allows them to focus on strategic decisions, such as investing surplus cash or raising additional funds, rather than managing routine tasks.

Many SMBs face challenges when they try to handle everything themselves, often reaching out to customers only when invoices are due. This can delay payments. By automating reminders and offering early payment incentives, you can encourage timely payments and improve cash flow.

Customizable Strategies

These strategies can be customized based on your specific situation. If you have surplus cash, you might use different tactics compared to if you are tight on cash. Similarly, if your sales team interacts frequently with customers, involving them in the collection process might be beneficial.

In today’s competitive and fast-paced business environment, getting cash in and deploying it quickly is crucial. Automating and simplifying cash flow processes can help an SMB operate at the level of larger companies.

The Role of AI in Finance

So, where does AI fit into the future of finance, particularly in cash flow management?

Simpli Capital has a powerful AI engine that we’ve been developing over the past three years. While there’s a lot of hype around AI today, especially with generative AI and tools like ChatGPT, it’s important to understand the core functionalities of AI.

AI generally does three things:

1. Prediction

AI can predict quantities, such as how much cash you might have in the future. Accurate predictions can significantly impact cash management.

2. Classification

AI excels at classifying data. For instance, it can help determine whether a transaction might result in default or if there’s a potential fraud. By classifying data, AI can provide early warnings and insights.

3. Generative AI

Generative AI, which is currently a major focus, involves converting data into meaningful conversations. Instead of just receiving numbers, you get analyses and recommendations. It can also help automate customer interactions, making your services seem available 24/7.

When applied to cash management, AI’s predictive capabilities can lead to more accurate cash forecasts, which is immensely powerful for financial planning and decision-making. The Importance of Accurate Cash Forecasting

Once you trust your cash forecast, you can invest more confidently. You won’t need as large a buffer and can focus on deploying cash rather than just keeping it in the bank. A smaller inventory of cash can be more beneficial than a large reserve, as long as you have accurate forecasting. AI enhances accuracy and is customizable at scale. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all model, AI systems are designed specifically for each company. Our models take about an hour to train for a company, yielding results with 80 to 90% accuracy.

AI in Classification

AI is also effective at classification. It can identify transactions that are likely to default or detect potential fraud. This modeling helps improve efficiency, decision-making, and overall strategic thinking by allowing you to focus on larger issues rather than getting bogged down in details.

The Role of Human Oversight

Human oversight remains crucial because strategic thinking cannot be fully automated. While AI handles data analysis and trend identification—such as noting that a customer consistently pays late—humans need to interpret these insights and make strategic decisions accordingly.

Common Operational Mistakes

Founders, especially in small companies, often make common mistakes. One major issue is not understanding cash burn. In today’s market, managing and deploying capital effectively is crucial. Success isn’t just about raising capital; it’s about creating value through effective capital management.

Switching from Early-Stage to Growth

As companies mature, they need to transition from accepting any deal to focusing on positive cash flow. It’s essential to invest organically in growth, improve efficiency in collections and revenue generation, and adapt to current conditions. With capital costs rising, these strategies are more critical than ever.

The Shift in Investment Strategies

Many early-stage founders mistakenly believe money is easy to come by, but in today’s environment, profitability and financial health are crucial metrics for raising capital. Investors are increasingly looking for companies that can execute growth strategies and deploy capital effectively.

Challenges in Early-Stage Startups

In the early stages, transitioning from a structured corporate environment to a startup setting can be challenging. Startups often face difficulties with capital raising and must become more efficient. In 2023, the capital raise environment was particularly tough, forcing us to reevaluate our cash burn and product roadmap. This process, though challenging, was a blessing in disguise, allowing us to refine our strategies and become more efficient.

Learning from Challenges

Going through such trials has taught us valuable lessons in managing cash, creating value, and transitioning from early-stage to a more mature company. While it slowed our product development, it also helped us focus on essential aspects and remove unnecessary features. We are now well-positioned for future success.

Simplicity and Authenticity

Simplicity in practice is crucial. At Simpli Capital, we strive to practice what we preach. Our focus on simplicity and effective cash management reflects our commitment to our values, making us a trustworthy partner in financial operations.

Understanding how to effectively manage and deploy capital, especially during challenging times, sets the foundation for future success. Managing Cash for Startups

Running a business fundamentally relies on effective cash management, which is true for startups as well. Even after securing your first round of capital, it's essential to think about extending your runway beyond the immediate future. Always prepare for the worst while hoping for the best.
